 DEBATE SPEECH

I want to look at this issue from different perspectives. You always think that homework is just some tests or activities that we solve in the books that makes us successful in the tests and exams and it wastes our time. Well, I don’t agree with that. Life is a series of homeworks. A young person who cannot develop the discipline to complete a small homework today will be overwhelmed by the huge responsibilities in the future. So homework doesn’t just prepare for exams, it makes us ready for the life. I also want to add that we forget that all the homeworks which makes us go to cultural activities, places and even shows, don’t we?  Theese homeworks makes our life more exciting and full.

I’m telling all those but I want to add that homework helps us in our school life too. Researchers at Duke University examined more than 60 studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework has a positive effect on student achievement.

Possible questions the other team may ask

If the other party says, "There's no homework in Finland, but they're successful" (which they most likely will), respond:

"In Finland, independent study periods during school hours already involves the reinforcement process that we call homework. This is exactly what we defend: that knowledge becomes permanent not just through listening, but through practice."
